Webquest on Bibliographic Searching

For this webquest imagine you're role playing being a librarian who has a request form for a specific book title. This process includes bibliographic searching and takes you up to the point of actually purchasing the book.

These are the skills you need to develop for this activity:
  1. Read and follow instructions.
  2. Understand the requirements of bibliographic searching.
  3. Locate specific Web sites and find required information.
  4. Take accurate notes to answer specific questions.
  5. Perform all of the steps in bibliographic searching.
Steps in this activity:
  1. Verify bibliographic information provided — make corrections if required.
  2. Locate review, best books list, or award citing this title.
  3. Compare Canadian (Cdn) costs listed at two online sources.

Requested Book:

Linda Aksomitis requests the book titled, A Prairie Nightmare, by P. Berton. Date required: anytime, but as soon as possible. Format requested: any.

The task outlined step-by-step (take careful notes):

  1. Verify the bibliographic information (author/title).
  2. Check if the item is located in your library collection. (for this webquest assume you're at the Saskatoon Public Library main branch - http://www.saskatoonlibrary.ca/ )
  3. Check if the item is in print (remember any format will suit the patron's needs).
  4. Find out the publisher, cost, and ISBN for the book.
  5. Determine from reviews, best reading lists, awards, etc., if the item should be added to your collection if you don't have it.
  6. Find the least expensive price from the online bookstores: Amazon.ca or Chapters.
